About Cochrane Minor Basketball

WHO WE ARE

The Cochrane Minor Basketball Association (CoMBA) is a non-profit Society that promotes and encourages basketball among area youth. CoMBA programs are open to both girls and boys, who range in age from 8 to 17 years and live in the Municipal District of Rocky View or the Town of Cochrane. We also offer a "Tykes" program which is a skill development program geared towards 6-8 year olds.

The success of CoMBA relies on the dedicated commitment of volunteers all of whom work for the benefit of our players and the community-at-large.

MISSION

The mission of the Cochrane Minor Basketball Association is to organize and implement a comprehensive community based Fall/Winter basketball program which instills a life-long passion of basketball. The CoMBA program promotes a balance of player participation, player skill development and developing competitiveness in our players while ensuring a safe, supportive and positive atmosphere.

GOALS

Participation

Promote participation of Cochrane area youth in our basketball programs with the belief that active children will be healthier and happier children. CoMBA strives to be accessible to all Cochrane and area youth between the ages of 6 and 17 years. By holding volunteer-based fund raising events, such as casinos, the CoMBA is able to keep costs down in order to provide our area youth more accessibility and ability to participate in CoMBA programs.

Development

Teach and develop conditioning, basketball skills and playing strategies to our Players to promote their enjoyment of the game and to assist in their advancement to the next playing level.

Model and teach good sportsmanship and fair play, respect for others, team commitment and player commitment to learning and playing the game of basketball.

Foster an effective, supportive and progressive environment in which all players and coaches can aspire to achieve their potential.

Competition

Provide a valuable opportunity by having our teams participate in the Calgary Minor Basketball Association to encourage competitiveness in our Players while at the same time emphasizing that good sportsmanship is also a priority.

EVALUATION PHILOSOPHY AND POLICY

CoMBA believes in having players play on teams compatible with their skill level. Where numbers warrant more than one team in an age category CoMBA will hold evaluations to determine player placement. Please refer to the CoMBA “Evaluation Philosophy and Policy”.

TEAM SIZES

Cochrane Minor Basketball whenever possible, attempts to organize teams based on the theory that A caliber Players should play with A Players, B Players with B Players and so on.

CoMBA attempts to have team sizes which encourages access to the sport and allows all youth interested in playing to participate while at the same time ensuring adequate development of our players through manageable practice numbers and ensuring meaningful game-play experience.

CoMBA feels that a basketball team size of 10 players is optimal. However, to balance the goals of maximizing access to the sport and participation with player development through meaningful practice and game play experience. CoMBA allows teams of between 9 and 12 players as a guideline. Exceptions to this guideline may be made at the discretion of the CoMBA Board.

Due to the small youth population to draw from and because we are a first come-first serve association there is the possibility that your child could be put on a wait list. If the appropriate age group is full the player will be placed on a wait list. Players on the wait list will be contacted by CoMBA should a spot become available. Should no spots become available a full refund will be issued.

PLAYING TIME

CoMBA teams compete in the Calgary league, except for the developmental Tykes Program. Regardless of skill level on any given team, the CoMBA requires that Coaches are responsible for playing all players listed on the score sheet for a significant and meaningful amount of time per game. All players listed on the score sheet must play in each period of the game unless excused due to illness, injury, late arrival or for disciplinary reasons.
